City of London in China

The City of London Corporation has maintained offices in Beijing and Shanghai since 2008, providing a permanent platform to strengthen UK-China links in financial and professional services (FPS). Over the years, our China programme has evolved to reflect key opportunities in areas such as capital & trade, green finance, and RMB internationalisation, while maintaining its core mission of fostering deeper bilateral cooperation. 

Our engagement builds on the long-standing relationship between the UK and China. We work closely with stakeholders across central and municipal governments, regulators, and the financial and professional services (FPS) business community.

The Corporation’s Chairman of the Policy and Resources Committee and the Lady Mayor play leading roles in our China engagement, working alongside our teams in China and London to advance strategic partnership and deliver tangible outcomes.

Our China work is guided through close engagement with the UK government and the UK’s financial and professional services community. Between 2010-2022 the City of London also convened the China Advisory Council, made up of Chinese financial sector experts, to promote two-way knowledge exchange and networking between the two markets.

The core objectives of the City of London’s China programme are to:

• Highlight the UK’s vibrant and thriving financial and professional services sector
• Support sustainable, long-term growth in trade and investment between the UK and China.
• Promote closer engagement with China on green finance, to maintain London’s leadership as a sustainable finance hub and accelerate the global transition to net zero.
