Smithfield Area Public Realm and Transportation Project
The Smithfield area is undergoing a major transformation with the relocation of the London Museum to West Smithfield, the first phase of which is due to open later this year.
To support this big change, the City Corporation is starting work on the streets around the Museum buildings. The project forms part of wider plans to transform streets and public spaces in the area, in line with the City of London Transport Strategy.
To facilitate the opening of the first phase of the new Museum, we will be widening pavements in West Smithfield and Charterhouse Street to improve accessibility for people walking and wheeling to and around the London Museum site. New cycle parking will also be installed.
The works are being closely coordinated with the London Museum and other works in the area to ensure efficient delivery and to minimise, as much as possible, the disruption to the people in the area.
In 2027 work will start on the streets around the second phase of the London Museum opening. More information on this will be available nearer the time.
Longer-term proposals are also being developed which focus on enhancing the public realm in the area around the museum to support the wider regeneration of the Smithfield area. Further information on these proposals will be published later this year for consultation.
