Street Cleansing

The City of London’s 81 miles of streets and walkways has a footfall of up to 450,000 people every day, meaning the street cleansing service deals with some of the busiest streets in the country. This requires a high-quality service working 364 days a year, both day and night.

Independent inspections by Keep Britain Tidy confirm that our streets consistently achieve the best cleanliness scores across those measured in London. However, if you notice any problem, please report it using our dedicated webpage so we can resolve it promptly.

Report a Problem

To help maintain these standards, we issue fixed penalty notices for littering and other environmental offences. This approach supports our commitment to a cleaner environment and encourages responsible behaviour from all who use our streets.

Pay FPN

Six million cigarette butts are dropped on the City's streets every year and we spend about £4 million cleaning them up. Anyone dropping smoking related litter may receive an £150 Fixed Penalty Notice and the offence attracts a maximum penalty of up to £2,500 and a criminal record for non-payment if convicted in a magistrates court.

Need help quitting smoking?

The City and Hackney Primary Care Trust provides free advice and support for City workers and residents. As well as improving your health, stopping smoking will save money. If you smoke 20 cigarettes a day stopping smoking will save you £316 a month, almost £3,800 a year!

Unfortunately, the City of London Corporation do not offer organised litter picking events in the Square Mile for the public or as part of any corporate social responsibility schemes. However, other volunteering opportunities are available at Volunteer with City Gardens

The Clean Street Partnership (CSP) is a City of London Corporation initiative that helps businesses work with Street Environment Officers to keep the Square Mile clean and litter-free. Whether you’re a hospitality venue, construction site, office, retail outlet, or transport hub, the CSP offers tailored support to manage litter, waste, and related environmental issues. By joining the scheme, your business gains access to expert advice and guidance on cleansing challenges, strengthens compliance with environmental responsibilities, and contributes to a cleaner City environment. If you would like to speak to a Street Environment Officer about the CSP, please contact the Street Environment Team or call 020 7332 4970.
