Scrap metal dealer licence

Any person operating a business as a scrap metal dealer in the City of London must apply to us for a licence to do so.

You must apply for a licence if:

• You intend to carry on business which consists of buying or selling scrap metal, whether or not the metal is sold in the form in which it was bought.
• You intend to carry on business as a motor salvage operator.

There are two types of scrap metal dealer licences.

A site licence issued by us authorises you to buy, sell, store or process scrap metal at a site in the Square Mile. A site licence may have multiple sites, but each site must have a site manager.

A collector's licence issued by us authorises you to carry on business as a mobile collector within the City.
