Modern slavery is when someone is exploited for personal or commercial gain. Whether tricked, coerced, or forced, they lose their freedom. This includes human trafficking, forced labour, and debt bondage.

People often become trapped due to poverty, exclusion, poor protection laws, or because difficult circumstances push them into risky decisions and exploitative work.

Signs of modern slavery to be aware of include:

  • Fearful, anxious, or distrustful of authorities
  • Malnourished or showing signs of trauma (physical/psychological)
  • Untreated or suspicious injuries, possibly from control
  • Unfamiliar with local language or area
  • Unsure of home or work address
  • Accompanied by or dependent on a controller
  • Believes they owe a debt
  • No access to ID documents
  • No days off or unable to leave work
  • Little or no social interaction
  • Threats made against them or their family.

Everyone in the City of London should be aware and alert to the possible signs of Modern Slavery.

To help support you with this, there is a range of training and resources available through the Home Office, which are free to access.
