Why recycle your electrical items?

Electrical and electronic items are some of the fastest-growing types of waste in the UK. Many contain valuable metals and plastics that can be reused, as well as harmful substances that must be handled safely. Recycling helps protect the environment, saves resources, and supports the City of London’s commitment to a circular economy.

This page explains how residents of the Square Mile can recycle their unwanted electricals and what happens to them afterwards.

What you can recycle and how?

Small electrical and electronic items

Examples: kettles, toasters, hairdryers, phones, tablets, toys with plugs or batteries.

Large electrical appliances

Examples: fridges, freezers, washing machines, ovens, TVs.

  • Book a bulky item collection through the City of London’s Contact Centre on 020 7606 3110.

  • Items must not be left beside estate bins or in communal areas.

What happens to your electrical waste?

The City of London works with ERP UK (European Recycling Platform) to ensure that all electrical waste is recycled legally and sustainably. All electrical items collected in the Square Mile are sent to ERP who specialise in WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) recycling. Wherever possible, working items are donated or refurbished for reuse. Non-working items are carefully dismantled so that valuable materials such as metals and plastics can be recovered and recycled. Hazardous items, such as fridges or fluorescent lamps, are treated in licensed facilities to prevent harm to people and the environment.

Tips for residents

  • Wipe data – remove personal information from devices before recycling.

  • Try repair or reuse first – if an item still works, consider donating or giving it away.

  • Never bin electricals – they can cause fires and harm the environment if put in general waste.

  • Store safely – keep electricals dry and intact until you recycle them.
