The City of London Corporation’s Adult Skills and Education Service offers a progressive range of digital courses from entry‑level through to Level 3, designed to help adult learners build foundational skills and pursue professional advancement. Whether you’re just starting your digital journey, looking to improve your existing skills, or even aiming to change careers, these courses provide accessible pathways to develop your confidence and thrive in today’s digital world.

This course will develop your confidence and skills in using digital devices and applications for everyday tasks at home, work, and in the community. You’ll cover topics such as online safety, using email, digital communication, and handling data. Suitable for adults with little to no formal digital skills. No previous qualifications required. An initial assessment will confirm suitability.

Progression route: Digital Skills Level 2 or Digital Skills for Work courses. 

Date: Wednesdays - 25 February - 1 July

Time: 10am - 1pm

Qualification Content, Structure and Outcomes

This qualification is designed for learners who want to gain knowledge of coding. The qualification may also support progression into further study in coding or other topics within the digital sector.

Commencing TBC (will run for seven weeks)

Successful enrolment on all courses is subject to an initial assessment.

Time: 10am - 3.30pm

This qualification aims to:

  • focus on an introduction to coding within the digital sector.

The objectives of this qualification are to enable the learner to gain an understanding of:

  • principles of coding
  • the stages of the software development cycle
  • coding terminology and the key principles of writing code
  • different coding types
  • best practices in coding
  • methods of testing and the DevOps process
  • effective communication and project management in coding.

To be awarded the Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Coding, learners must successfully complete 5 mandatory units.

Unit titles/topics:

  • Understand the principles of coding
  • Understand terminology used in coding
  • Understand coding design principles
  • Understand the processes and practice of coding
  • Understand the importance of communication and project management in coding

Assessment

This qualification consists of an assessed portfolio of evidence, which is assessed by our Internal quality assurance (IQA) and externally quality assured by NCFE(external link).

Progression Opportunities

Learners who achieve this qualification could progress to the following:

  • Level 3 Certificate in Coding Practices
  • Level 3 Certificate or Diploma in IT User Skills
  • Level 3 Certificate in Programming.

Qualification Content, Structure and Outcomes

This qualification is designed for learners who want to increase their knowledge, skills and understanding of coding. Successful completion of the required units will allow the learner to develop in-depth knowledge, skills and understanding of coding practices. It will also support progression into relevant employment and further study in coding.

Will commence 5th May (will run for 14 weeks)

Successful enrolment on all courses is subject to an initial assessment.

In-person days: Tuesdays and Fridays (you will require a laptop and internet access to complete this course)

Time: 10am - 3.30pm

This qualification aims to:

  • focus on the study of coding, within the Information and Communication Technology sector
  • offer breadth and depth of study, incorporating a key core of knowledge
  • provide opportunities to acquire a number of practical and technical skills.

The objectives of this qualification are to enable learners to:

  • understand the stages of the software development lifecycle, software methodologies and how working as a team contributes to effective software delivery
  • understand the purpose and use of coding standards, coding principles and practices and coding design processes
  • write and debug interpreted and compiled code distinguishing the different coding solutions
  • fix bugs using appropriate techniques and reflect on how bugs can be prevented
  • understand deployment, configuration management and version control systems.

To achieve this qualification, learners must successfully demonstrate their achievement of all learning outcomes of the units.

Qualification Content, Structure and Outcomes

This qualification is designed to provide learners with sector awareness. It will do this by increasing the knowledge and understanding of roles and issues relating to Cyber Security. It will also act as a stepping stone for learners who wish to study cyber security at a higher level.

Commencing TBC (will run for 7 weeks)

Successful enrolment on all courses is subject to an initial assessment.

In-person days: TBC

Online days: TBC (you will require a laptop and internet access to complete this course)

This qualification aims to:

  • focus on the study of the principles of cyber security
  • offer breadth and depth of study, incorporating a key core of knowledge of cyber security.

The objectives of this qualification are to enable learners to:

  • provide learners with knowledge and understanding of the principles of cyber security.

To be awarded the Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Cyber Security, learners must successfully complete 6 mandatory units.

  • Introduction to cyber security
  • Understand terminology used in cyber security
  • Understand legal and ethical aspects of cyber security
  • Understand common threats to cyber security
  • Understand methods of maintaining cyber security
  • Understand working with others in cyber security

Assessment

Learners who achieve this qualification could progress to the following:

  • Level 3 Certificate in Cyber Security Practices

This qualification is designed to provide learners with knowledge and skills relating to cyber security practices. It will provide the learner with a chance to develop knowledge and learn practical skills which can be used to seek employment or proceed into study at a higher level.

The objectives of this qualification are to enable learners to:

  • provide the learner with an opportunity to develop knowledge and skills relating to cyber security practices.

To achieve this qualification, learners must successfully demonstrate their achievement of all learning outcomes of the units.

Qualification Content, Structure and Outcomes

This qualification is designed to equip learners with the knowledge and skills required to enter a job role within the digital workforce area, such as a data technician.

Commencing 26th January 2026 (will run for 8 weeks)

Successful enrolment on all courses is subject to an initial assessment. Initial Assessments will take place week commencing 19th January.

In-person days: Tuesdays and Thursdays

Online days: Mondays and Wednesdays 

Time: 10am - 3.00pm

This qualification aims to:

  • Focus on the study of data in the digital sector
  • Offer breadth and depth of study
  • Provide opportunities to acquire a number of practical skills

The objectives of this qualification are to enable learners to:

  • Understand how to source data
  • Collate and format data for processing and analysis
  • Analyse data to support business outcomes
  • Present and communicate data to the appropriate audience
  • Store, manage and distribute data securely
  • Collaborate with others and practise continuous professional development

To achieve this qualification, learners must successfully demonstrate their achievement of all learning outcomes of the units as detailed in the qualification specification.
