Privacy notice by department
Chamberlains
The Chamberlain’s Department consists of a range of financial and management services are provided including: stewardship of the City of London Corporation's finances and assets, budget setting, forecasting and monitoring; strategic financial advice to members, departments and the City Corporation as a whole; corporate accounting; monitoring of investment securities portfolios and treasury management of cash balances; billing and collection of local taxes and sundry income; payment of invoices and the assessment of benefits to support City residents.
City Surveyors (CSD)
CSD is responsible for the City Corporation’s property investment portfolio, corporate real estate and property/construction projects, and also includes the Central Criminal Court (the Old Bailey) the principal Crown Court of England and Wales.
City Surveyors: Central Criminal Court
The Central Criminal Court, widely known as the Old Bailey, is owned and managed by the City of London Corporation and operates within the City Surveyor’s Department. As custodians of one of London’s most historic and iconic judicial institutions, we are dedicated to upholding the highest standards of operational excellence in the management and maintenance of the Court building.
We deliver a comprehensive range of high-quality services—including security, facilities management, and catering—to His Majesty’s Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS), as well as to all associated departments and stakeholders. Our work ensures that the Central Criminal Court remains a secure, efficient, and dignified environment for the administration of justice.
Beyond our core responsibilities, we actively support the Mayoralty and Shrievalty in their efforts to promote the City of London. Through these civic engagements, we contribute to enhancing the City's national and international reputation and play a meaningful role in the cultural and institutional life of the United Kingdom.
Department of Community and Childrens Services: Adult and Childrens Services
The Department of Community and Children’s Services (the Department) delivers a wide range of services. These are predominantly in response to a statutory (legal) requirement to support certain adult and child residents with needs – such as with adult and children’s social care, support with special educational needs or those that ask the local authority for help with homelessness- or with access to education.
The department supports one “maintained” (state) school, The Aldgate School that provides primary education for some children living in the Square Mile and others in neighbouring authorities and has a legal duty to ensure resident children have school places.
Similarly, the Adults Skills and Education Service, provides for residents and non-residents Public Health services – such as stopping smoking, health promotion, and drug and alcohol services- target both those who live and work in the Square Mile.
The Department’s Community Library Service is open to all residents and workers, some offer services – such as home delivery – limited to those who live in the Square Mile.
Department of Community and Childrens Services: Housing Services
The Department provides housing services (management, repair, and development of housing stock) to residents in the Square Mile and across our estates in six other London local authority areas.
Department of Community and Childrens Services: Community Safety Team
The Community Safety Team delivers a key role in coordinating the statutory Community Safety Partnership and wors across the Corporation and with partner services (City of London Police, probation, health and fire services amongst others including the voluntary sector) to address community safety issues, such as complex cases of anti-social behaviour that arise in the Square Mile.
Department of Community and Childrens Services: Joint Public Health Service with Hackey Council
Comptroller and City Solicitors Department
The Comptroller and City Solicitors Department is responsible for providing all legal services required by the City of London. This includes providing legal advice to Committees, Departments of the Corporation, to the Commissioner of Police for the City, and to institutions for whom the Comptroller & City Solicitor is required to act as legal adviser (e.g. the Museum of London).
The main areas of law covered by the C&CS include commercial property and land law, housing, litigation, employment law, contract law, planning, trusts and company law.
The department deals with over 2,000 new legal matters every year and this covers anything from heavyweight property acquisition and disposals to horse riding byelaws in Epping Forest.
Electoral Services
Electoral Services has a separate data controller in respect of processing personal data for electoral purposes.
Environment Department
The Environment Department includes City Operations, Planning and Development, Port Health and Public Protection, Natural Environment and the Small Business Research Centre and provides front-line services to the City and beyond including but not limited to:
- Management of open spaces;
- Operational, transport and public realm activity on the Square Mile’s streets and public spaces;
- Planning and Development including policy, the District Surveyor’s office and the City Property Advisory Team;
- Environmental health, trading standards, licensing, port health, and animal health & welfare.
Innovation and Growth
Town Clerks Department
The Town Clerk’s Department oversees several business-critical areas across the City of London Corporation. It is made up of three directorates plus Destination City, the City Corporation’s growth strategy for the Square Mile :

Deputy Town Clerk
The Deputy Town Clerk is responsible for the co-ordination of political and policy advice to the City Corporation's leaders and elected Members, supporting the City Corporation’s decision-making processes, and other key areas of cross-cutting corporate activities.
The teams and functions reporting to the Deputy Town Clerk are: Departmental Business Support; Resilience; the Office of the Policy Chairman; Mansion House and the Office of the Lord Mayor; Culture; Destination City; Corporate Health and Safety; Governance and Member Services; Livery Engagement; City of London Police Authority; The London Archives and the Town Clerk's Private Office.
Communications and Engagement
This directorate delivers strategic communications and external affairs across local, London-wide, national, and international communities. The team leads on: campaigns and community engagement, media and digital communications, internal communications and engagements, commercial filming, transformation and strategy communications, and corporate affairs.
Corporate Strategy Officer (CSO)
The CSO and areas which sit within this function enables the wider City Corporation to deliver its aims and objectives through providing corporate, strategic, and wider support. The team drives an integrated and insightful approach to strategy, planning, corporate performance and analysis, risk management, Chief Officer Governance, and Equity, Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EEDI).
The CSO is responsible for the City Corporation’s Corporate Plan and associated reporting, corporate performance and departmental business planning, overseeing corporate risks and mitigation measures, ensuring EEDI is observed in corporate standards and service delivery and the development and performance against the City Corporation’s Equality Objectives.
